WHAT IS DIABETIC RETINOPATHY (DR)?

DEFINITION OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY (DR);

   It is a noninflammatory retina disease characterized by progressive retinal vasculature dysfunction secondary to chronic hyperglycemia.



 

 SYMPTOMS OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY (DR)

 The symptoms are related to visual impairment;

  • In the early stage, it is asymptomatic.
  • Gradual loss of vision occurs due to the involvement of the macula.
  • Sudden visual loss occurs due to vitreous hemorrhages.
STAGES OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY (DR)

  1. Background diabetic retinopathy
  2. Pre-Proliferative diabetic retinopathy
  3. Proliferative diabetic retinopathy
  4. Diabetic retinopathy
  5. Advanced diabetic retinopathy
PROLIFERATIVE DIABETIC RETINOPATHY (DR)

It is characterized by;

  • Retinal neovascularization
  • New vessels at the disc
  • New vessels elsewhere
  • neovascularization of the iris
  • vitreous hammeroge
