RETINAL DETACHMENT

 DEFINITION

It is the separation of the sensory retina from the retinal pigment epithelium by Subretinal Fluid (SRF).

SYMPTOMS OF RETINAL DETACHMENT  

  • Flashing of light
  • Floaters
  • Fall of vision
  • Field defects
Note: Flashes and floaters are present in about 60% of cases.



SIGNS RETINAL DETACHMENT

  • Confrontation test 
  • Relative afferent pupillary detect when total loss of vision.
  • Intraocular pressure is about 5mm Hg
TREATMENT  RETINAL DETACHMENT

  • Treatment is surgical.
  • The goal of surgery is to seal off the communication between the vitreous cavity and subretinal fluid.
