Pink Eye (Mucopurulent Conjunctivitis)

What is Pink Eye?

Pink Eye, also known as conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva characterized by a discharge containing mucus and pus and severe redness in the eye.




 What causes Pink Eye in adults?

In adults, Pink Eye is caused by contact, with secretions. While almost any bacteria can lead to conjunctivitis the common organisms responsible for it are Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae. 

What are the symptoms of Pink Eye?

The symptoms of Pink Eye include an onset of redness in the eye a feeling of having something in the eye burning sensation and discharge. Upon waking up in the morning it's not uncommon for the eyelids to be stuck together due to accumulated exudate during sleep.

How is Pink Eye treated?

  • The treatment for Pink Eye involves irrigating the conjunctiva to remove all discharge.
  •  Maintaining hygiene is also important by clearing any exudate or crusts from the edge of the eyelids and eyelashes.

Are there any eyedrops recommended for treating Pink Eye?

Topical antibiotic drops such as ciprofloxacin, moxifloxacin, tobramycin 

and ofloxacin are commonly used as eyedrops, for treating Pink Eye.
